Smartdate is a venture-funded startup focused on disrupting the online dating market. We launched the first version of our product in Spring 2010, featuring innovative search technology, virtual gifts and Facebook integration. We're adding features like recommendations, chat and more.
The initial application has been built with Ruby on Rails, but we are beginning the process of moving to a service-oriented architecture. To date, we've migrated the search functionality to a RESTful Web service, written in Python with Pylons, which uses the Sphinx search engine. We're planning on moving other key functional areas in the same way. We're not set on one techology; rather, we want to use the most appropriate tools for the job in each case.
You should have:
- a solid understanding of the HTTP protocol
- a firm grasp of REST principles
- expertise with at least one of Java, Python or Ruby (the more, the better)
- experience with multi-threaded server programming in Mina, Twisted, Tornado or EventMachine
- network programming experience
Bonus points for:
- knowledge of MapReduce and Hadoop
- familiarity with Rails
- previous startup experience
- previous experience with high-traffic Web sites
- exposure to Agile software development methods
- European working papers
